The Rutland Recreation and Parks Department is offering several programs for kids starting in May and June. Many have an early deadline for registration, that is quickly approaching. The programs include:
Tee ball — An instructional program for girls and boys using a safety ball. Participate in fun games and drills to learn the basics during this 45-minute introduction to baseball/softball. Parent participation is mandatory, open to ages 5-6 by Aug. 31, 2016. The program runs on Sundays from 3 to 3:45 p.m., May 15 – June 26. Cost is $25 for Rutland city residents and $36 for non-residents. Register before May 5 to avoid a $10 late registration fee.
Mitey Mites — This is a coach-pitch league for boys and girls using a safety ball. Players will have the opportunity to work on and expand upon the skills learned in tee-ball through skills sessions and games. Open to grades 1 – 2, the program runs on Sundays, May 15 – June 26 from 4:30 to 5:45 p.m. with games played on Wednesdays from 6 to 7 p.m. starting May 18 – June 22.
Fees are $30 city resident, $41 non-resident. Register by May 5 to avoid $10 late registration fee. Junior league — Teams are part of the Rutland County Youth Baseball league, a traveling league that runs mid-June to mid-August with games played weekday evenings and some Saturdays. Players must play for the community they live in. In order to be eligible for playoff participation they must play 70 percent of the games. Teams are limited in size to register early atrutlandrec.com. League is open to those born between May 1, 2000 ,and April 30, 2003. Cost is $60 for city residents and $71 for non-residents. A refundable $40 uniform deposit is required.
Majors softball — Teams are part of the Rutland County Girls’ Softball Association, a travel league with games played on Monday and Wednesday evenings and some Saturdays. The league is open to grades 6 – 8. Programs runs June 13 – July 24. Cost is $48 for city residents, $59 for non-residents.
Seniors softball — This is a traveling league with games played on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and some Saturdays. Teams are part of the Rutland County Girls’ Softball Association. The program runs June 13 – July 24, and is open to grades 9 – 12.
