9-year-old from Poultney accidentally shot by father

IRA — On Sunday, Aug. 30, at 11:19 a.m. EMS and Vermont State Police responded to the town of Ira, for a report of a nine year old girl who had been accidentally shot by her father. The child, McKenzie P. Ezzo, had reportedly been shot in the stomach by her father, Randy A. Babcock from Poultney, while Babcock was clearing a .22 caliber handgun. The incident took place at the Babcock family camp located in a wooded area off the north side of Route 4 in Ira.

The child was carried by family members to the Ira rest area where they were met by emergency personnel. The child was first transported by EMS to the Rutland Regional Medical Center and later airlifted to the University of Vermont Medical Center where she underwent surgery.

At last report the child was in ICU and listed in guarded condition. The Vermont State Police Troop C Bureau of Criminal Investigation is conducted an investigation into the incident, as is the Vermont Department for Children and Families.
