Woodstock celebrates July 4 all day long

Saturday, July 4 — WOODSTOCK — Celebrate Saturday, July 4 in Woodstock – rain or shine!  Festivities begin early, with the 39th Annual John Langhans 7.1 Green Mile Road Race, Team Challenge & Kids Fun Run sponsored by The Spectrum Teen Center. Runners, walkers and teams will enjoy a challenging course through beautiful Woodstock, starting and finishing at the Woodstock Village Green. The Kids Fun Run is a short loop around the Village Green. This year’s team challenge includes up to five members on a team with a $100 entrance fee; team members solicit sponsors to raise money for a charity of their choice. For more details or to register or the Team Challenge, email Heather Rubenstein at hrubenstein@wcsu.net. To register for the race as a runner or walker, register online at www.active.com; the fee is $30 for runners and walkers by July 3; $35 on race day (includes a cool t-shirt). Check-in/same day registration begins at 7:30 a.m. Runners, walkers & team challenge starts 8:30 a.m.; Fun Run begins at 10:30 a.m. (no registration is necessary for Fun Run).

Post-race festivities will include music, division awards and an award for the most patriotic costume. The Kids Fun Run (ages 10 and under) is free and all kids receive a finisher’s metal.

Billings Farm & Museum’s Old Vermont 4th Celebration begins at 10 a.m., featuring ice cream making, wagon rides, historic debate, flag making, spelling bees, and more.

The Woodstock Recreation Center gym and pool are open to the public free from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

The excitement continues at the Woodstock Union High School at 6 p.m. with games and activities, including a bounce house by VT Volunteer Services for Animals Humane Society, and Purple Crayon Productions with the “Change the World Kids.” The Spectrum Teen Center’s cookout and picnic will serve hot dogs, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, sausage and peppers, drinks and desserts. The “Lazy Cow” ice cream truck will serve ice cream treats.

The evening entertainment starts at 6 p.m. with Batmaker and from 7:30-9 p.m. Enjoy free ice skating at the Union Arena Community Center from 6-8 p.m. Skate rentals will be available for all sizes. At 7 p.m., the Ora E. Paul American Legion and Boy Scout Troop 220 will perform a flag ceremony.

Capping off the evening is the July 4 fireworks display at dusk sponsored by the Town of Woodstock, with support from local businesses and organizations.
