Welsh weekend converges on Vt./N.Y.

June 11 & 12 — A Welsh weekend of events is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, June 11 and 12 in the slate valley of Vermont and New York. The events are sponsored by Poultney Area St. David’s Society, co-hosted by the: Welsh-American Genealogical Society (WAGS), United Baptist Church, St. John’s Episcopal Church and Welsh Presbyterian Church in Poultney and Peniel Presbyterian Church of Granville.

On Saturday, June 11, a Welsh Family History seminar will take place from 9:30 a.m. -12 p.m. featuring guest presenter Susan Davies Sit, genealogist, who was born in north Wales. It will be held in United Baptist Church, East Poultney. Luncheon, tour of the historic church by Pastor Todd Eaton and one-on-one sessions with Susan Davies-Sit are included. Pre-registration was required.

From 3 – 4 p.m., the third annual Welsh Heritage Service of Evening Prayer will take place at St. John’s Episcopal Church, East Poultney. The service will be spoken in the English language; scripture will be spoken in the Welsh language by Nia Davies Demiray, native of Abersytwyth, Wales and a member of Poultney Area St. David’s Society. Organist will be James Cassarino, director of Welsh heritage and professor of music studies at Green Mountain College. Light refreshments will be available after worship in the garden, weather permitting. All are welcome. Donations will be gratefully received.

At 6 p.m., the Gathering of the Clans dinner will be held at the Iron Lantern Restaurant, Castleton. Pre-registration was required.

On Sunday, June 12 at 10 a.m., a Flashmob Worship Together will take place at Welsh Presbyterian Church, Grove Street, Poultney, officiated by Reverend Lee Smith. All are welcome. Donations will be gratefully received.

At 2 p.m., all are welcome to “Gymanfa Ganu & Te Bach” (traditional hymn sing and tea social) at Peniel Presbyterian Church, Quaker Street, Granville, N.Y., led by Crystal Everdyke, director of the Granville Area Chorus and director of band in the Granville public school system, with organ accompanist Lois Warner. The Reverend Dr. R. Raymond Lloyd will officiate. Scripture will be spoken in the Welsh language by Meredith R. Rehbach, a member of the St. David’s Society. The service and some hymns will be in the English language. Te Bach (tea social) will be in the fellowship hall following the gymanfa ganu. Donations will be gratefully received.
