Weekly Tai Chi class offered in Rutland

RUTLAND—Learn the traditional Sun style of tai chi with accredited instructors Becky Collette and Larry Walter, in a free class entitled “Tai Chi for arthritis and fall prevention.” Classes will be held every Thursday from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., beginning Feb. 26, at Green Mountain National Forest Supervisor’s Office, 231 North Main Street (just north of Tenney Brook Market & Deli and south of Field Avenue), Rutland.

The Sun style of tai chi has been modified by Dr. Paul Lam of Australia to address persons with arthritis, but has also been proven to reduce falls, improve coordination and balance, mood and posture, and can reduce blood pressure and control blood sugar. The moves being taught will require very gentle movements of all joints with an emphasis on safety and fun.

Class size will be limited, so applicants will be accepted by order of application. Each class builds upon the former, making it imperative that students commit themselves to a consistent attendance record. For those who miss a session, a video is available which will walk students through any particular moves that have been missed.
