VINS announces Insect Festival 2021: bugs, bees, caterpillars

Aug. 6-7 — QUECHEE — The Vermont Institute of Natural Science is excited to announce the 2021 Incredible Insect Festival! New this year, VINS invites everyone to join for both virtual and in-person events.

On Friday, Aug. 6 at 6 p.m., VINS will be hosting a virtual webinar just for VINS Members, “Growing Up as a Bug.” During this webinar, we will join Bryna B. in her insectarium in Costa Rica to learn about the unique parenting styles and family dynamics of various insect species. Every insect family is different, so imagine how many amazing stories are happening right under our feet and above our heads, every day!

This event is sure to delight and engage any bug enthusiast — and hopefully convert any bug-squishers out there!

On Saturday, Aug. 7, everyone is invited to join in-person at the VINS Nature Center off Route 4 in Quechee from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for a full day of fascinating insect-focused fun!

Renowned insect expert Sam Jaffe will showcase a multitude of live caterpillars from the caterpillar lab. Participants will learn about the importance of pollinators and meet a local beekeeper.

In addition, meet entomologists who study the small insects found in streams and lakes. Through demonstrations, exhibits, games and crafts, visitors to the VINS Nature Center will have a fun day discovering the insects who share our backyards, forests and waterways.
