Undermanned, motley Rutland squad sinks Ironsides, 19-0

By Maxx Steinmetz

On Saturday, April 11, the Rutland Rugby Football Club travelled down to Boston’s Joe Moakley Memorial Park to face the Ironsides for their spring season opener.

In the spirit of the spring season, and the generosity of the Ironsides, as well as some past players arriving out of the wood work, Rutland was able to field a 14-man side —despite traveling with seven players.

Throughout the muddy match Ironsides threatened to take advantage of Rutland being a player down, but were stopped short of the line on several occasions through the defensive efforts of Rutland’s core players.

Rutland on the other hand were able to convert several of their ventures into the Ironsides half into points on three occasions with Dan Belluscio, Adam Diemar and Keith “Crazy” Duncan, all touching down the ball for a try. Adam slotted his two attempts at conversion, despite strong winds that lasted through out the game.

A photo of the early season match appeared in the Sunday, April 12 edition of The Boston Globe.
