July 20-29—RUTLAND—Award-winning Rutland Youth Theatre presents Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” as a traveling troupe in several Rutland County locations and in Springfield, July 20-29. The play is produced and directed by Saskia Hagen Groom; stage manager is Barb Lassen.
Set in the early kingdom of Denmark, the play dramatizes the soul-searching that Prince Hamlet undergoes when his father’s ghost calls upon him to wreak revenge upon Hamlet’s uncle, Claudius. Claudius had murdered his own brother—Hamlet’s father—and seized the throne, also marrying his murdered brother’s widow—Hamlet’s mother. “Hamlet” is considered one of the most powerful and influential tragedies in English literature and has been performed on both stage and screen.
