Rutland Regional Medical Center recognized as a best maternity care hospital by Newsweek

Rutland Regional Medical Center was named to Newsweek’s 2021 Best Maternity Care Hospitals list. The distinction recognizes facilities that have provided exceptional care to mothers, newborns and their families, as verified by the 2020 Leapfrog Hospital Survey.

Best Maternity Care Hospitals is part of Newsweek’s Best Health Care series, powered by data from The Leapfrog Group. Best Maternity Care Hospitals were first designated in 2020.

“This recognition underscores the value of our cohesive family-centered OB program.  We have board certified OB providers, clinic-based OB nurse Care Coordinators, and Birthing Center Nurses who work with community pediatricians and pediatric nurses to deliver high quality and integrated care for the whole family” said Robin Leight, MD, FACOG, medical director of Rutland Women’s Healthcare. “Together we guide patients through their pregnancy and pathway to delivery with individual and personalized care.”

“Best Maternity Care Hospitals showcases an elite group of hospitals nationwide,” said Nancy Cooper, global editor in chief of Newsweek. “These facilities should be commended for the care they provide to women and families, and for giving babies a strong start to life. As families continue to cope with the effects on the pandemic, this information can support Newsweek’s readership in planning for one of life’s most precious moments.”

Hospitals named as a Best Maternity Care Hospital have fully met The Leapfrog Group’s rigorous standards for maternity care excellence. This includes achieving lower rates of C-Sections (NTSV), early elective delivery, and episiotomy, as well as assuring bilirubin screening for all newborns and blood clot prevention techniques for mothers delivering via C-section.

Rutland Regional Medical Center was one of fewer than 225 hospitals nationwide to receive the prestigious accolade, and the only hospital in Vermont. The full list of recipients will appear in Newsweek online and at newsstands nationwide.

“The Best Maternity Care Hospital award dovetails nicely with the recent SCOPE Certification which Rutland Women’s Healthcare received in 2020,” said Elizabeth Kyhill, MSN, RN, senior director of physician practices at RRMC. “SCOPE is a voluntary patient safety review program where we assess how we implement and use patient safety concepts and techniques in the office setting. The teams at both Rutland Women’s Healthcare and the birthing center are continually looking for areas of improvement and it is nice that these efforts are being recognized.”
