Local schools, organizations honored for workplace wellness, schools wellness

More than 70 businesses and organizations that employ Vermont workers have been selected to receive a 2022 Vermont Governor’s Award for Excellence in Worksite Wellness. Developed more than 20 years ago by the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports and presented in partnership with the Dept. of Health, the annual awards provide an opportunity for the governor and health commissioner to thank businesses and organizations for their efforts to support Vermonters’ health and make Vermont a great place to live and work.

Local recipients include Albert Bridge School in West Windsor, Hartland Elementary in Hartland, Mt. Ascutney Hospital in Windsor, King Arthur Baking Co. in Norwich, and Springfield Hospital.

Throughout the pandemic, employers have piloted innovative programs, from virtual group exercise sessions and mental health webinars to delivering healthy snacks to workers’ homes. Many of these innovations will continue going forward, as employers have realized the benefits of supporting their workers’ physical, mental and social wellbeing. Shining a light on these successful practices encourages more businesses and organizations to foster wellness, to the mutual benefit of Vermont employers and workers, said Janet Franz, chair of the Governor’s Council.

“Employers can play a key role in creating a culture of wellbeing where workers, their families, and their communities can live healthy lifestyles, and this ultimately benefits the employer,” Franz said. “When people feel good, both inside and outside the workplace, they do quality work. They are invested in their careers, their companies and their customers.”
