Little white church serves last supper of fundraising season

By Robin Alberti

Recently, the Sherburne United Church of Christ (the little white church) located on Route 4 near the junction with River Road hosted the last of seven fundraising suppers. Proceeds from these suppers provide most of the capital needed to keep the doors of the church open.

Each year the church hosts bus tours of leaf peepers from all over the country visiting our area to soak up the scenery. Sylvia Finer from Woodstock coordinates with the church to bring buses of tourists for a home-style supper each week during the fall. This last group from Pennsylvania got to enjoy a supper of roast turkey with all the fixings, and apple pie for dessert.

The suppers are staffed by volunteers from the church and local community. Jo Biathrow, who spent 36 years working for Killington Resort — 26 of those years running the kitchen at the Peak Restaurant — was there early in the morning getting the turkeys in the oven. Her husband Henry, and Andy and Nan Solomon were on hand to help carve the turkeys and dish out apple pie. Ron Willis washed the dishes. Though there have been talks over the years of hiring someone to help him with the task; he prefers to do it himself. Join Pastor Beverly and this wonderful church community for service every Sunday at 9 a.m.
