Downtown businesses in Rutland and Brandon to close?

The Inside Scoop to close, building owners hope to keep tradition alive

BRANDON — After 10 years in business, Joel and Janet Mondlak have decided to close the town’s ice cream parlor. The Inside Scoop and Antiques by the Falls is located at 22 Park Street next to the Brandon Inn. Innkeepers Louis and Sarah Pattis own both buildings.

The Mondlaks and the Pattis’s, however, hope the tradition of old-style ice cream and collectable antiques will continue with new owners. The Mondlaks have sold all of the ice cream equipment to the Brandon Inn and have relinquished the name “The Inside Scoop.”

The Pattis’s hope find new tenants to run a similar operation. “There is a great opportunity for an entrepreneur to move into the location,” Louis Pattis said in a press release. “We are looking for someone who wants to run an ice cream parlor there.”

The store will continue serving ice cream through mid-Nov. and close for good Dec. 31.

Joel and Janet Mondlak will continue to work in antiques and collectables. “Over the next year, we will continue to with the antiques, buying and selling and expanding online sales, and we’ll do more shows,” Janet Mondlak told The Brandon Reporter in a phone interview last week.

The couple moved to Brandon in 1988 and raised two daughters.

Griffin’s Publick House closed?

Patrons hoping to dine at Griffin’s Publick House found it locked Sunday, Sept. 14, with a “closed” sign posted on the door.

The pub, located at 42 Center Street in downtown Rutland, opened in the spring of 2013 and is co-owned by Darwin Harder Jr. and Don Hubert. The gastropub served many comfort foods as well as an extensive microbrew line on tap.

The reason for the sudden closing is unknown and neither restaurant owner could be reached for comment. The building is owned by Mark and Erica Balestra.

Some speculated that it has been closed for good, but that information could not be verified.
