Saturday, July 24 at 11 a.m. —RUTLAND — Rutland’s 77ART will open its doors to the community. Come meet the artists and view the work they completed during their nearly month-long stay in the city at their studios in the Opera House.
Nine young artists are participating in this year’s first 77ART residency program. A diverse group, all are accomplished artists, most with advanced degrees from highly-regarded institutions. Their work is multidisciplinary, ranging from traditional painting to video, soundscape, and performance art.
Here are some of the thought-provoking works on display and the artists you will chat with:
- Gabriel Bielawski is developing an installation re-enacting the ritual creation of the golem, a body made from clay brought to life through mystical Jewish practice.
- Using plastic, rust and embroidery, Katherine Earle invites us to confront our precarious existence on Planet Earth.
- Ben Paljor Chatag is a Tibetan-American who uses traditional Thangka painting to explore Tibetan cultural ideas.
- Jonathan Sims’ work is characterized by brightly colored geometric abstractions that evoke universal, ancient design.
There may be opportunities to buy the artists’ work. When these residents leave, a new cadre of 11 artists from all over the U.S. will be arriving for another residency in August. More information on 77ART, visit 77art.org.
