On Feb. 10, the Vermont State Police were notified of a possible stolen credit card, originating in North Clarendon, Vt. Initial investigation revealed that unauthorized purchases of fuel were being made to a credit card account owned by 74-year-old Phillip Alderman of North Clarendon. These purchases had occurred at the rate of one per week or more over the past six months at an Exxon/Mobil Station located on South Main Street in the City of Rutland. On Feb. 11 State Police located 56-year-old Dorran Cooley, of Brandon, Vt., as he was pumping gas at that station while using a “Speedpass” attached to Alderman’s account. The full scope of the fraudulent use of Alderman’s Speedpass is pending investigation, but the total amount fraudulently charged was $984.47, making the case a felony offense. Cooley was taken into custody at the gas station and transported to the Rutland Barracks, where he was processed and later released with a citation to appear in Rutland Superior Court (Criminal Division) on March 21. He faces charges of Felony False Pretenses.
