Rutland county residents display holiday lights

Dear Editor,

This is one of my favorite times of the year. As a child I always enjoyed looking at Christmas displays. I still have vivid memories of the big plastic Santa in his sleigh being pulled by reindeer that would float over Merchants Row from Woolworths (now the Asa Bloomer Building) heading towards the McNeil & Reedy store.

Years later I now have the pleasure of taking hundreds of people each year looking at Christmas displays on my Vermont Backroad Tours Christmas Light Tours. But you don’t need anyone else to make those special family memories this season. Get your loved ones young and old and take a few nights this year to go out and look at the many wonderful displays that so many residents in our county put time and money into making their neighborhoods so festive.

There are many houses that are decorated each year. People ask me: what is the best? I have a hard time nailing down one individual exhibit. It can be as subjective as asking what is the most beautiful flower. Sometimes a single large pine tree on the front yard decorated with just blue lights (as we can see each year on Bellevue Ave. in Rutland), can make the night as memorable as Art Hetzel’s grand display on Route 7A in Clarendon.

But here’s a tip for this week. Check out Moonbrook Drive, Victor Place and Sharon Drive just off the east side Stratton Road across from Piedmont  Drive.
