Former U.S. Secretary of State and retired four-star U.S. Army General Colin L. Powell will give a presentation at Norwich University on Veterans Day, on Nov. 11.
Powell will deliver remarks for the Todd Lecture Series at 7 p.m. in Shapiro Field House.
Powell has served four presidents as a military and diplomatic expert over the course of his 50-year career. He was President Ronald Reagan’s national security adviser in the late 1980s and was chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff for presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton.
President George W. Bush appointed Powell Secretary of State. In 2003, Powell helped the Bush administration justify the invasion of Iraq under the premise that Saddam Hussein, the despotic leader of the country, had weapons of mass destruction. Powell came under sharp criticism when the military was unable to locate the biological weapons.
Since he left office in 2005, Powell has worked on efficient energy use, economic development and improving educational opportunities.
Powell has written two books, “My American Journey” and “It Worked for Me.” He serves on the board of City College of New York and the Council on Foreign Relations.
