Woodstock man drowns after falling out of kayak

BARNARD — On Tuesday, Aug. 18, police reported what they believe to be an accidental drowning on Silver Lake in Barnard late on Aug. 15. At approximately 11:50 p.m. Saturday night, Vermont State Police responded to the scene of a drowning on Silver Lake in Barnard. State Police learned that Ernest Wardwell, age 45 of Woodstock, Vt., was kayaking with two family members on the lake when he fell out of his kayak and later drowned. A family member reportedly had attempted to rescue him but was unable to do so. Wardwell was located and recovered by the responding fire department. Police believe it was an accidental drowning.

Having served 22 years in the U.S Coast Guard I’ve seen way too often the outcome of folks mixing alcohol with recreational watersports; whether on a canoe, boat, kayak, jetski, or just going out for a swim. I’m thankful no other family members were deceased whom I’m sure were just as intoxicated.
    Please remember to wear a lifejacket!!!
