VELCO selects new general counsel

RUTLAND—Vermont Electric Power Company (VELCO) President and CEO Tom Dunn announced Jan. 8 that Colin Owyang, will serve as VELCO’s vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary effective April 7, 2016, subject to approval by the VELCO board. Mr. Owyang succeeds Karen O’Neill, who will retire after holding the position since 2010.

“Karen is a key member of my leadership team in whom I have absolute trust,” said Dunn. He added, “I was unable to convince her to stay but Karen is as excited as I am at the prospect of Colin joining our team. Colin’s demonstrated skills, breadth and depth of experience and core values make him the ideal choice to serve as VELCO’s general counsel. This was not an easy choice given the extraordinary quality of the finalists. We are truly fortunate to be able to secure the services of someone of Colin’s caliber.”

In describing the opportunity, Colin said, “I am grateful to Tom for his vote of confidence in selecting me. It will be a great privilege to serve as VELCO’s next General Counsel and to join a cohesive, high-performing leadership team at a progressive, mission-driven organization dedicated to its community.”

Owyang is currently serving with the Massachusetts Attorney General’s office after having worked almost 11 years at National Grid USA, including six years as senior vice president and general counsel overseeing approximately 180 legal and regulatory staff. He is married to Dr. Deirdre O’Reilly and has three sons, ages 15, 12 and 1 ½.
