Political Cartoons continues to exhibit at Chaffee

RUTLAND—Chaffee Art Center announced the opening of Political Cartoons in the end of September. The exhibit features historical cartoons from the Amity Art Foundation, and contemporary cartoons by Steve Halford. The exhibit runs through Nov. 5.
Amity Art Foundation has sponsored this exhibit featuring its founder/director John A. Stewart’s collections. The cartoons from Bill Crawford and William Newton Canfield were originally published in the Newark News and the Newark Star Ledger in the 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, and syndicated in more than 700 newspapers by the Newspaper Enterprise Association. These historical cartoons capture the issues of yesterday, which mirror many political issues still facing us today; the cartoons depict historical political heavyweights such as Harry S. Truman, Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Robert Taft, Lyndon Johnson, Barry Goldwater, and Nelson Rockefeller.
Steve Halford’s political cartoon posters have been used in area environmental protests. His focus is on the environment and Vermont politics. The cartoons offer insight into some of the problems we face regionally, including forest use, energy consumption, and resource rights.  Steve lives a politically active life here in Vermont, and is a long standing Chaffee Juried Artist Member.
Thanks to area demand for more opportunity to view—and the artist’s approval—“Eye on Nature: Photographs by Steve Costello” will remain up as a separate exhibit on the second floor of the art center until Nov. 5.
Chaffee Art Center is open Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. and Saturday, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Chaffee is located at 16 South Main Street, Rutland.
