John Marshall strives to attend prestigious performing arts school in New York City

Sharon Academy's John Marshall presents an evening of vocal music and spoken pieces at Chandler, Sept. 7 to fundraise for his schooling

The 2012 alumnus of The Sharon Academy has recently been accepted to The American Musical and Dramatic Academy, a prestigious performing arts school in New York City. The school has offered generous financial aid, but the expense is daunting. So Marshall is using creativity and determination to follow his dream to help bridge the financial gap using his performing gifts to raise funds.

Community theater lovers in Central Vermont and the Upper Valley are probably familiar with John Marshall. His memorable performances have included Captain Hook in Chandler's 2012 production of "Peter Pan"; Harold Hill in "The Music Man" for North Country Community Theater, for which he won a New Hampshire Theater Association Best Actor Award; and Fagin for BarnArts' production of "Oliver" in 2012.

In May 2012, Marshall appeared as a vocalist in Chandler's "The Next Generation", a performance featuring outstanding classically trained teenage instrumentalists and vocalists. Currently he's working as a paid actor with the Momentum Theatre Troupe, traveling the country on a truck that turns into a stage.

Past directors speak highly of his talent. Bill Sawyer of North County Community Theater says, "He walked onto stage and I instantly saw him as a lead role. Rehearsals were amazing. He was totally committed to what he was doing."

Charlie McMeekin, director for The Sharon Academy and Chandler productions, says, "I have worked with many outstanding young actors over the course of the past 35 years, and John possesses both the velvety singing voice and limber physical talent which make him a delight to watch on stage, and to listen to as well."

Jarvis Green, Founding Artistic/Executive Director of BarnArts was captivated by his portrayal of Captain Hook at Chandler.

"Throughout the entire performance I had my eye on him and immediately after the show went up to him... I know when a person has that sort of 'it' factor to make it. I'm not worried about John when he goes to New York. In a couple of years, he will be on his way."

John Marshall will offer an evening of vocal music and spoken pieces in Chandler's Esther Mesh Room on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 7 p.m. Final details of the evening are being worked out, but audience members will be treated to a fine mix of music, spoken pieces, and hors d'oeuvres with lots of time to visit with Marshall and to bid on items in a silent auction. Pianist Marta Borgstrom will accompany him.

Admission is by donation. Reservations are strongly suggested and can be made by calling the Chandler Box Office at 802-728-6464 weekdays 3-6 p.m. For more info visit  http://johnjosephmarshall.wordpress.com
