Girls on the Run Vermont announces new central Vermont 5K

Governor Peter Shumlin to attend June 1 event in Rutland

RUTLAND - Girls on the Run Vermont is thrilled to announce a new 5K run/walk, to be held Saturday, June 1, at 10 a.m. at the Vermont State Fairgrounds in Rutland. Governor Peter Shumlin will be on hand to speak before the event and share words of encouragement and support with program participants, their families and friends, and community members, all of whom are invited to take part. Girls On The Run Vermont has two established 5Ks, in Brattleboro and Essex Junction, but due to the program's phenomenal growth statewide-some 3,000 girls are currently enrolled-a third 5K was needed. Girls on the Run Vermont Director and Founder Nancy Heydinger of Brattleboro describes the event as a "mile of ponytails, sweaty faces, and beaming smiles."

The mission of Girls on the Run is to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience based curriculum which creatively integrates running. All proceeds from the June 1 event will go toward scholarships for girls statewide who might not otherwise be able to participate in Girls on the Run.

Even those who are not taking part in the program or running in the 5K are invited to come support the event participants. "The 5K is a highlight of the program and the girls have enthusiastically trained for it," says Heydinger. "But even more than that, as past participants know, this is an inspiring event. It's a wonderful way for the community to show support for healthy living, self-respect, and a great youth program." Many community members are volunteering to help put on this event, but many more are needed to help on race day.
