Rutland Railroad Museum, Model Club receives $24,000 in grants

Rutland Railroad Museum and Model Railroad Club have been the beneficiaries of three recent grants totaling $24,000 awarded to its corporate parent, Rutland Railway Association. The funds will be used to begin restoration and various repairs of the 100-year-old Center Rutland Depot, which houses the organization.

The Vermont Community Foundation, committed to strengthening the state's nonprofit sector, awarded a grant of $1,000, which was earmarked for repairs to the Depot's roof.

A further grant of $3,000 was awarded by the Amherst Railway Society of Amherst, Mass. to be used toward the cost of energy efficiency programs. The announcement was made at the annual Railroad Hobby Show held in West Springfield, Ma., sponsored by the Amherst Railway Society. Over 25,000 people attended the event this year.

An anonymous local foundation has made a generous unrestricted grant of $20,000. President matt Rockwell indicated that, "those funds were a total surprise and were very gratefully received. They will be directed toward additional energy conservation projects and several deferred maintenance needs to preserve the historic Center Rutland Depot."

The RRA is planning to host its second annual Rutland Train Show at the Howe Center on Sept. 28, 2013. Based on the popular response to last year's show more exhibitor space has been reserved.

The public is invited to visit the Rutland Railroad Museum to see the extensive collection of rail artifacts, document and photographs as well as the huge operation model trail layout on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free. The Depot is located on Depot Lane, just off business Route 4 in Center Rutland.
