On April 16, a fire on Hollister Quarry Road in Pittsford
resulted in a family of six, including three kids, displaced out of
their home. Local American Red Cross disaster services volunteers
responded to the scene to provide assistance.
Three volunteers with the Red Cross Disaster Action Team out of
Rutland responded to the blaze. The emergency needs of the
displaced family were assessed and financial assistance provided to
help with food, clothing and other items lost in the fire. While
temporary lodging is frequently provided by the Red Cross to fire
victims, in this instance, the family already had alternate
arrangements.
With the Rutland region experiencing an increased response rate
this year and recognizing, now more than ever, the importance of
being prepared for the large-scale responses, the Red Cross is
actively seeking an infusion of more volunteers.
