KILLINGTON - On Saturday, Sept. 28, Base Camp Outfitters in
Killington, Vt. hosted the 2013 Green Mountain Point Series Finals
and Vermont State Championship. This disc golf tournament rotates
from qualifying courses year to year and BCO was a great choice for
the Green Mountain Disc Golf Championship - one of the most
important events of the year.
There were many winners on the day, as champions were crowned both
for the tournament, and for the 12-event GMPS that spanned the
entire season, starting with an opening event at Pinnacle in New
Hampshire and traveling up north to Montgomerey before working it's
way down through Jeffersonville, to Waterbury, Calis, Montpelier,
and other stops along the way before finishing up back down South
in Killington, Vt.
The point series champions were up in the air coming into the
event with the Pro Open, AM1, and Pro Grandmasters hanging in the
balance. The players sitting in second place had a strong chance to
knock off the leaders on the final day.
The AM1 battle was between three potential winners; leader Kyle
Junion, Aaron Bunker, and Jon Moorer, with David Whitaker sitting
in fourth place looking to move up into second with a great finish.
The AM1 battle was one of the best stories all year, with large
fields, multiple different winners and consistent tightly grouped
scoring. Though a few of these players will move up to Pro next
year, the advanced field should grow again and provide great
competition for 2014.
Mike Miller and Jeff Spring were also clinging to leads that were
vulnerable in the PGM and MPO divisions, needing to keep Tood
Sternback and Mike Habets respectively from winning on the
day, which in each case could bump them out of first in the
As the day wore on, the leaders, while none winning outright on
the day, were all able to stave off their challengers and hold on
for the Point Series Championships.
GMPS 2013 Champions:
Pro Open: Jeff Spring from Smugglers Notch, Vt.
Pro Masters: Josh Rappeport from Sugarbush, Vt.
Pro Grandmasters: Mike Miller from BCO in Killington, Vt.
Kyle Junion, Waterbury, Vt.
Am2: Tim Tadlock from BCO in Killington, Vt.
The State Championship tournament was also a great battle across
several divisions, most notably Pro Open, where an exciting playoff
developed between Sean Bleything and Jeff Spring. Spring gave up
the 1st round lead after throwing a 48 while Sean stayed steady
with two rounds of 51. While the crowd was getting into it, the two
went back and forth with great putts to stay alive on back to back
holes. However, on the 3rd hole it was revealed that there was a
scoring error during the second round, and Sean Bleything in fact
had won the event before the playoff even started!
Pat McGinn from BCO also made some noise, throwing down for the
Am1 win, including a nice 53 in the first round, a competitor
who will be a force next season if he chooses to play more
