Christopher J. Franco, age 49, of Killington, passed away
unexpectedly last week while playing golf with friends at Green
Mountain National Golf Course. Known simply as "Franco," he was an
active and involved member of our community who had called
Killington his home for over two decades.
Known best for his culinary talents, Franco had been working as
the Executive Chef at The Foundry at Summit Pond since its opening
last fall. He was a mainstay of the Killington restaurant scene
having worked at Casey's Caboose, the Lookout Tavern and On The
Rocs over the years, and was a respected teacher and mentor to many
of the chefs and kitchen staffers who worked with him. He also
spent a year in North Carolina helping a friend open the Sea Glass
Cafe and Bakery, adding "pastry chef" to his many skills during
A determined athlete, Franco was an avid skier in the winter and
could be found most summer and fall days at Green Mountain National
Golf Course. He had won the Club Championship twice and enjoyed
introducing new players to the game he loved. He was also an umpire
for the Killington Softball League after a long and "distinguished"
career as a player.
Franco's true passion was music. He loved to grab his guitar and
join any of Killington's musicians onstage for a song a two. He's
hosted an "Open Mic Night" at Jax Food & Games and was
well-known for his heartfelt renditions of Rocky Raccoon, Angel
from Montgomery and Seagull.
Originally from Fall River, Mass., he was a fierce and loyal fan
to all of the Boston sports teams, especially the Red Sox and the
New England Patriots. He was always eager to discuss games and
rosters and felt it a personal mission to show Yankees and Giants
fans the "error of their ways."
Franco is survived by his mother, three sisters, four brothers
and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his extended
family and all of his friends in Killington.
He will be remembered by all for his smile, his laugh, his
generous and kind spirit and his love of food and music.
Franco will be forever remembered for his love of Killington and
the people who live and visit here.
