Dear Editor,
I am writing this letter to support Killington Constable Whit
Montgomery's desire to serve as First Constable in
Killington.
As most Killington residents are aware I have been providing
security services to the Killington Resort for almost 30 years.
During that time we have relied on the State Police for assistance
and when they were not available we have worked with the
constables. Over the last few years we have been getting much more
of a response from the constables instead of the State Police for
whatever reason.
As you know a resort town brings very different approaches to
law enforcement. There needs to be a balance to law enforcement in
a resort town. That balance is not easy to obtain. You want the
public to enjoy their experience in Killington and at the same time
you want to ensure the safety of the public. It's very easy to
become either heavy handed or too light with your degree of Law
Enforcement.
We currently have that balance with our constable, Whit
Montgomery. He understands the hospitality industry and it comes
through in his law enforcement. Over the last few years we have
been working more and more with Montgomery and I am extremely
impressed with his ability to separate those that are just having a
good time that got out of hand as opposed to those that are up to
no good or are a danger to themselves and others. This is not an
easy task at times.
I have known Montgomery for almost 30 years. He has spent his
entire life in Killington. He has devoted a good portion of his
life to Killington. He is one of the younger generations that have
decided to call Killington, Vt. home. He has a love for this town
and it shows in his interaction with people in trouble or causing
trouble.
I have witnessed Montgomery in some pretty trying situations. He
has always maintained his composure and worked towards resolution
of the particular issue.
We have a constable right now that serves this town and its
guests very well and has track record of fair and balanced law
enforcement, a person that is familiar with law enforcement in a
resort town, a person that has a love for this town and a desire to
see it prosper and a man that has devoted the better part of his
life to this town. I would ask that you strongly consider Mr.
Montgomery to be your First Constable.
If you should have any questions, comments or concerns please
feel free to reach out to me.
Sincerely,
Jim Eckhardt
