The Rutland Free Library announced, Friday, Dec. 7, the hiring
of Randal Smathers as assistant director, effective Dec. 3,
2012.
Paula J. Baker, director of the library, made the announcement
following an extensive search both locally and nationwide by a
hiring committee that included Baker, members of the board of
directors of the library, staff and the public. "We are excited to
have Randal join our team at the library," said Baker. "I believe
this is a good match that will benefit the communities we
serve."
Smathers brings both management experience and local knowledge,
having spent the past several years as editor of the Rutland Herald
and most recently Manchester Newspapers in Granville, N.Y. He has
also been active for that time in the community, serving on the
boards of the Paramount Theater and the Rutland Area Physical
Activity Coalition (RAPAC), as well as the branding committee of
the Creative Economy group.
He is a graduate of the University of Alberta in Edmonton,
Canada, with both a bachelor's and master's degree in English, and
has worked in Moscow, Washington, D.C., and New Hampshire. Smathers
lives in Rutland City with his wife and two sons.
Rutland Free Library is a nonprofit public library serving the
communities of Rutland City, Rutland Town, Mendon, Ira and
Tinmouth.
