Killington’s Sushi Yoshi opens third restaurant in Stowe, open year-round

STOWE - Sushi Yoshi, which has been part of the Killington, Vt. restaurant scene for 20 years, has opened a new location in Stowe. Owners Howard Smith, Nate Freund and chef Kevin Zheng leased the building at 1128 Mountain Road, and opened for business on August 26.  Both Smith and Freund already have ties to the Stowe community - Freund's family founded Squash Valley Produce, and Smith, who also owns Killington Snowmobile Tours, operates Stowe Snowmobile Tours.

Smith opened his first restaurant on the Access Road in Killington in 1991, offering Chinese takeout. The menu later expanded to offer sushi, and in 2002 the restaurant relocated to its current location, formerly Mother Shapiro's, and added Hibachi grills.

In the summer of 2005, the Chinese Gourmet Sushi Yoshi opened a large restaurant on Route 9 in Lake George just south of the village. Their newest Sushi Yoshi in Stowe occupies the site of a former McDonalds, which has also housed a couple of failed Japanese restaurants. The building has undergone extensive renovation, interior design and cleaning, and the owners believe they have a winning formula.

"Stowe is a great town, with an exciting restaurant community. We are very excited to introduce chef Zheng's creative Asian cuisine," said Smith. "We feel strongly that our product and our service are strong enough to succeed, and we're looking forward to serving Stowe for a long, long time."

Like its counterparts in Killington and Lake George, Sushi Yoshi in Stowe will put a major emphasis on providing money-saving deals to locals. Both Killington and Stowe locations will host an annual "Good Guys' Party" in September, where locals receive cards for half-price sushi and Hibachi for the whole year.

Good Guys cards and gift certificates issued in Killington can also be used at the Stowe restaurant.

Open seven days a week for lunch and dinner, Sushi Yoshi serves up gourmet Japanese and Asian fusion cuisine until 10 p.m. on weekdays and 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. The Killington restaurant will reopen for the season in late September. The Stowe restaurant will be open year-round, and offer takeout. For more information, call 802-236-7900, or visit
