Longboarders reach daredevil speeds at the Downhill Throwdown

By Polly Lynn

KILLINGTON — This past weekend, Aug. 9-10, the town of Killington hosted the Downhill Throwdown, a two-day competition for a variety of daredevil disciplines including standup skateboard, street luge, and drift trike.

The competition kicked off at 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday on East Mountain Road. Approximately 100 riders from across the country traveled to the heart of the Green Mountains to experience Killington’s two mile steep, windy, downhill mountain course. It was the first competition of its kind on this course.

Competitors reached speeds of over 50 mph and wipeouts were frequent! Spectators watched from designated areas behind haybale barriers that helped to protect them from most of the crashes.
