Killington Softball League: blowouts

By Dave Hoffenberg

It was a week full of blowouts and the Garlic McGraths had two of the biggest in a double header against the Sum Boss Bombers at Bridgewater Town Field. In the first game, McGraths came out swinging, scoring ten runs in the first inning as they batted through their order.

Cliff Melendy fired up the hit machine with a single and everyone followed suit, everyone but Jeremy “The Beer Hunter” Prior, that is, who struck out for the the first “Cold Beer K” of the game. Melendy scored twice in the inning. The Bombers got on the board in the second inning when John “Karaoke King” White, in his first ever at-bat for the team and in the league, hit a RBI single scoring Max Zucchini who reached base with a walk. Unfortunately, White struck out in his next at-bat and got his first ever “CBK,” too.

The second inning was slow for McGraths, who only scored two runs to make it 12-1 but they quickly turned things around in the third with another big inning. They batted through their order yet again, this time scoring nine runs. Zucchini scored again in the fourth off another walk and that would be all the runs the Bombers would get. McGraths added a few more and finished the Bombers off with a 25-2 four inning mercy. McGraths team veteran Dola Holland was moved way up in the batting order to bat clean-up and it paid off as Holland went two for two with two walks, two RBI’s and four runs scored. McGraths pitcher Bob Pauly was “en fuego” on the mound, limiting the Bombers to five hits and delivering four “CBK’s.” The Bombers Rob “Norty by Nature” Norton had a web gem with a diving catch at the plate to get Coach Jamie Rameau out.

The next game was more of the same except McGrath’s started a little slower with only eight runs after two innings. For the Bombers they were the same, only scoring two runs the entire game. McGraths scored ten more for the 18-2 fifth inning mercy. “Tweed Bus” Bob Schaffner was a perfect four for four with four runs scored, three RBI and was a home run away from hitting for the cycle. Pauly stayed hot only giving up four hits this time but did not get any “CBK’s” so that was a plus for the Bombers.

The Killington Deli Team bashed Slips, Trips and Falls (STF) with a 17-1 four inning mercy win. Matt “No Cold Beer” Beers scored the lone run in the first inning. STF had a chance for more right after but pitcher Aaron Haskell struck out with two on. Unfortunately, for Haskell he added another “CBK” later, this time looking as he watched it land on the plate. TKDT scored four in the first behind power hitter Evan Anderson’s two run homer. They too had a chance for more but Ian “Way to Go” Waye struck out to end the inning. They consistently scored every inning to secure the big win. Coach Craig Brothers was a perfect three for three with a home run and three runs scored.

STF had little time to regroup as they had to immediately take on Clearly Moguls. They got on the board first as Colin Greene drove in two runs. Clearly Moguls started hot, scoring 11 runs in the bottom of the first and going one and a half times through their order. Brett “Anger Management from Will?” Regimbald had a nice looking “sac” to score the first run. DJ Dave Hoffenberg showed off his power with a bases-clearing two-run bunt in his first at-bat. Both teams exchanged zeros in the second. Green scored a run in the third to make it 11-3. CM still could not get back on the board. STF scored in the fourth and then CM woke back up the bats and blew the game wide open, scoring ten runs in the last two innings to seal the 21-7 mercy win.

Not to be outdone by Regimbald, Will “The Thrill” Burdick had a nice looking “sac” of his own in the fifth. CM had a few players with some outstanding stats. Both Angel Shannon and Judd “Magnum” Washburn were three for four with three runs scored. Shannon’s includes a long homer and they combined for six RBI. Jackie Blue Livesey is challenging for “Best Pitcher in the League” as he is still undefeated all-time with a 7-0 record, but it was Jared “Vroom Vroom” Hall who was the least impressive going one for three with two “Cold Beer K’s.”
