Sunday, Aug. 7 at 2 p.m.—ORWELL—Mount Independence rocks! Come to the state historic site in Orwell on Sunday, Aug. 7 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. for a “Hike into Geologic History.”
Geologist David Gross will guide this tour to explore the geology of Mount Independence, one of the largest American defenses constructed for the Revolutionary War.
What made the Mount “strong ground” for the Americans to build here in 1776 and 1777?
This is one of many programs this year to celebrate the site’s 240th anniversary, as well as the 50th anniversary of the trail system.
Meet at the museum. Wear sturdy shoes or boots and bring water. Admission is $5 for adults and free for children under 15, and includes the museum and all the trails.
The Mount Independence State Historic Site is one of the best preserved Revolutionary War archeological sites. The site is located at 497 Mount Independence Road, six miles west of the intersection of Vermont routes 22A and 73 near Orwell village. Carefully follow the signs; where Route 73 veers to the right, continue straight.
Hours are 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through Oct. 10.
