Green Mountain National Golf Course opens this weekend

KILLINGTON—Green Mountain National Golf Course will open for the 2016 golf season on Thursday, April 14 while skiers and riders are still hitting the mountain at the Killington Ski Resort.

“Where else can you golf in the morning and then ski all afternoon except for the Town of Killington?” asked Green Mountain National’s head golf professional and general manager, Dave Soucy.

To celebrate this intersection of the golf and ski seasons, Green Mountain National will offer a special $35 rate, including cart, if you show your Killington Resort ski pass or lift ticket until May 1.

“After the mild winter, the course is in amazing early-season shape and the greens and fairways really look fantastic. We are ready to start the season and have a great year planned for our members and guests,” said Soucy.

Headlining the summer calendar at Green Mountain National is the return of the American Junior Golf Association’s (AJGA) Killington Junior Golf Championship, featuring the top junior golfers from around the world. This year’s tournament has been moved to July 3-7 and will once again attract close to 150 players with dreams of joining the PGA and LPGA tours — these young players will represent over 20 states and five different countries. AJGA alumni include newly-crowned Masters champion Jordan Spieth, Tiger Woods, Phil Michelson, Paula Creamer and Vermont’s own Keegan Bradley.

“Having the tournament in July this year will allow the AJGA players, and their families, to enjoy all of Killington’s great new summer activities and attractions when they are not here at the golf course,” added Soucy. “Plus, it will certainly add to the energy and excitement of Killington’s Independence Day celebration!”

Also on this season’s tournament schedule, Green Mountain National is proud to host the Vermont State Women’s Golf Association’s Amateur Championship Aug. 8-10.

In addition, GMNGC will again welcome over a dozen charity golf tournaments and outings that make the course their home year after year, representing organizations such as the Cairo Shriners’ of Rutland, the Killington/Pico Rotary, the Rutland Region Chamber of Commerce and the Vermont Retail and Grocers’ Association’s Scholarship Tournament, just to name a few.

Other popular events include the Table 24 Golf Tournament to benefit the Rutland Parent & Child Center, and The Foundry’s Goombay Golf Classic to benefit the Teddy Bridges’ Scholarship Fund. A complete listing of events and tournaments, and daily updates, can be found on Green Mountain National’s Facebook page.

Golfers can also expect the return of popular club events and activities including Thursday Night Twilight League, the Killington Pico Area Association’s Wine & Nine Golf Tournament, and the GMNGC President’s Cup and Club Championships for its members.

The course will also offer weekly clinics on Saturday mornings and the PGA of America’s “Get Golf Ready” program on Monday evenings. Both are fun and inexpensive ways to help get more adults playing golf.
