AJGA brings top youth golfers to Killington this week

By Ethan Weinstein

Tuesday, June 22 through Thursday, June 24 Green Mountain National Golf Course (GMNGC) is hosting the American Junior Golf Association’s (AJGA) Killington Junior Golf Championship, presented by Junior Golf Hub.

Cancelled last year due to Covid, the Killington Junior Golf Championship, now in its 11th year, features some of the country’s best high school golfers.

“We were really excited to be able to be back here and running the event again, for the kids — they’re age 12 to 18 — that are playing. They’re all just trying to boost up their status, trying to earn some college golf scholarships, and get recognized,” said Tournament Director Sydney Della Flora.

For many of the young golfers, the tournament provides an exciting opportunity to play in front of coaches from colleges around the Northeast. A good performance this week may pay dividends down the line.

State representative Jim Harrison is the volunteer coordinator for the tournament. He praised the event as a source of business for the local economy, not to mention an opportunity to watch many fantastic young golfers.

“A lot of people are coming in and visiting and staying here. I’ve heard countless parents say they just like it here: It’s beautiful, they’d like to come back. [The tournament] puts Killington on the map and garners reputation for all the area has to offer,” he said. “It’s really good to see some really quality young people playing the game. I mean, these are the best of the best. This is the same program that Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson played when they were in high school.”

“It’s a great event. We need to attract people here in Vermont, and what better way to do it,” he added.
