Saturday, Oct. 24 at 9 a.m. — BRANDON — The Compass Music and Arts Center welcomes Anna Laufenberg, who will lead this workshop on early music for recorder, flute (or oboe) and strings, taking place on Saturday, Oct. 24 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

During this one day workshop, participants will travel back into the musical world of the early Renaissance and the Baroque, starting with movements of Pierre Attaingnant’s (c. 1494 – c. 1551) dance collections. This will be followed by instrumental polyphonic music that was popular at the Elizabethan Court, through the time of Giovanni Gabrieli (c. 1554 – 1612). He composed many pieces in which one choir or instrumental group would play first followed by a response of the second group (double choir) placing the two, sometimes three different groups on opposite sides of the cathedral. The musical journey will close with music of the early Baroque era as the polyphonic compositions style developed slowly towards harmonic tonality.

Anna Laufenberg holds a bachelor degree in recorder, piano and early childhood music education. She is an active member of the American Orff Schulwerk Association, the American Recorder Society and teaches early childhood music classes for children age two to nine.

Over many years, she performed with different musical groups from the Middle Ages, Renaissance and the Baroque on recorder and flute and prefers playing on period instrument reproductions.

This workshop is suitable for intermediate to advanced amateur recorder, flute (or oboe) and string players with sight-reading skills. Recorder players must be able to play at least two different instruments of the recorder quartet (soprano and alto or soprano and tenor, etc.) to meet the expectations of all participants and to balance class assignments.

Workshop fee is $70. Space is limited to 10 participants. Register by Oct. 16 by calling 802-247-4295 or email info@cmacvt.org.

Compass Music and Arts Center is located at Park Village, 333 Jones Drive, Brandon. For more info, visit cmacvt.org.
