Deadline looms for gingerbread entries

Deadline looms for gingerbread entries

RUTLAND—The Chaffee Art Center will once again host its annual gingerbread construction competition. The contest is open to all ages, and family or group entries are allowed. Professional chefs are invited to be part of this event, but those creations will not be included in the judging. This year’s contest theme is Animal Kingdom. Let nature be the muse in creating the edible design.
Draw inspiration from animal’s homes such as an eagle’s nest, a mole’s burrow, or a domestic cat’s favorite window. Sculpt an animal from rice crispy treats or cookie cutter molds big like a polar bear or small like a bumblebee. Create a diverse habitat many call home: coral reefs, rain forest, or city streets where a plethora of pigeons and humans can be found. Or let the imagination drift to fictional worlds of dragons, unicorns, or Bigfoot.
Creations will be on display at the Chaffee Art Center from Dec. 14-23. The rules for submission are as follows:

  • entry deadline is Saturday, Dec. 10 by 3 p.m.
  • entry form and fee ($15) must accompany creations
  • be sure the base is sturdy
  • all materials must be edible, but are not limited to gingerbread
  • no kits permitted
  • designs may be 2D or 3D
  • entries in and outside of the theme will be accepted and displayed

Prizes are awarded for Best in Theme and People’s Choice Award at a holiday party and reception on Saturday, Dec. 17 from 1-3 p.m. Public voting will open on Dec. 14 and close at 1:30 p.m. on Dec. 17.
Entry form may be found online at chaffeeartcenter.org/2016-gingerbread or at Chaffee Art Center, 16 South Main Street, Rutland. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Friday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. and Saturday, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
