CSJ weekly athletics roundup, season’s end

RUTLAND — With fall sports coming to a close and winter sports just on the horizon, it’s a good time to reflect on what has been an impressive year so far for College of St. Joseph. Men’s soccer finished the regular season with a Yankee Small College Conference best 7-1 record and a 10-6-1 overall record. Due to their stellar play, they were awarded a bid into the USCAA National Tournament, hosted by Warren Wilson College in Asheville, N.C., Nov. 4-7. The team has been led offensively by Dominick Simpson, who ranked first in the conference in goals and points with 18 and 36, respectively. The Fighting Saints will face off against the No. 9 seed, SUNY Delhi, who are making their first trip to the National Tournament. They play Wednesday, Nov. 4 at 2 p.m.

The volleyball team had a productive first season, working together and getting better with each passing day. They struggled to get victories, but that was to be expected with a brand new program and players that have never played together before. The team has a lot to build off from this opening season and hope to come into next year with more confidence and chemistry after practicing in the off season.

The Lady Saints had a successful fall season in softball, coming just short of winning the YSCC championship. They played NHTI in the championship finals, and were unable to find their bats, losing 0-6. Up until that game, CSJ dominated their competition, led by strong pitching from Maggie Miller and Jenna Crowley. The offense also played well all season, accumulating double figure run totals on a regular basis. The team looks forward to picking up where they left off when the spring season comes around.

CSJ baseball was also a success story this season, finishing with a win over Southern Maine in the YSCC championship game. Tyler Kunzmann earned MVP of the tournament and Chris Doyle received the Tournament Best Offensive Player award. The Saints had a perfect conference record this fall, not showing any signs of weakness to their conference foes. Their pitching was outstanding, delivering shutout performances time and time again. They look to build on their success this offseason and come into the spring ready to defend their title.
