CSJ weekly athletics recap

The Fighting Saints men’s basketball team played four games last week and were able to come out with a 3-1 record. The Saints were able to split with Maine – Fort Kent and beat Central Maine and Maine – Machias to improve their overall record to 4-1 on the season thus far. The women’s team returns to the court on Nov. 21.

Nov. 8

The Fighting Saints men’s basketball team lost to Maine – Fort Kent 87-82. CSJ was led by Kyle Houston’s 20 points. Josh McAfee was on fire with 19 first half points, which included five threes. Saints newcomer Jallah Tarver also added 15 points of his own.

Nov. 11

Men’s basketball earned a win against Central Maine CC with a final score of 78-72. The Saints came back from an 11 point deficit in the first half to secure the victory, relying on their hard-nose defense and overall gritty play. Jallah Tarver was able to contribute 17 points throughout the contest. The 6-foot-3 Tarver transferred to CSJ from Herkimer College this year. Josh McAfee, Kyle Houston and Kareem Brown all scored in the teens as well. The Mustangs had more assists, second chance points, and points in the paint than the Saints by a wide margin. CSJ was able to pull out the victory because of their energized and determined defense. The Saints forced the Mustangs to commit a devastating 21 turnovers, and they took advantage of their opportunities on the other end of the floor. CSJ ended up with 23 points off of turnovers, compared to Central Maine’s 12.

Nov. 13

Matched up against Maine – Fort Kent, the Saints seemed determined to defeat the team that had just beat them six days prior. The Saints turned a two point deficit into a 14 point lead when they went on a 18-2 run with 6:47 remaining in the game. Maine – Fort Kent went to its full court pressure to get the game back to single digits, but the Saints were able to hold them at 76 points. After a streak of free throws in the final minutes, the Saints walked away with a 84-76 victory.
