March — CASTLETON — Castleton University will once again participate in the nationwide celebration of Women’s History Month during the month of March, by featuring an array of on-campus activities, lectures and speakers throughout.
Since 1988 Castleton has proudly highlighted the influence of women through the celebration of Women’s History Month. This year, a variety of events from speakers and discussion panels to the annual Equity Bake Sales will capture the theme “Honoring Women in Public Service and Government.”
“One of the best things about Castleton’s Women History Month celebration is that it is truly a collaborative effort. Women from across campus come together to plan a month of activities which focus on the achievements and aspirations of women,” said Assistant Dean of Campus Life and Chair of the Castleton Women’s History Month Committee Victoria Angis. “The staff and faculty who plan these activities do so to celebrate our peers, our heroes, and our role models. We hope to inspire our students to realize that they can achieve their dreams.”
Kicking off the celebrations will be author and Associate Professor of Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies at the University at Albany Janell Hobson, as she addresses history and contemporary black womanhood on Thursday, March 3 at 12:30 p.m. in the Campus Center 1787 Room.
Guest speaker Dana Singiser, Vice President of Government Relations and Public Policy of Planner Parenthood Federation of America, is scheduled to speak on Tuesday, March 8. In conjunction with her presentation, the annual Equity Bake Sale, highlighting the average gendered wage gap in the workplace, will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Campus Center Solarium.
Every Wednesday in the Alumni Room of Huden Dining Hall, the highly anticipated “Every Woman Has a Story” will take place beginning at 12 p.m. Over the course of four weeks, a mix of eight Castleton women will to share their personal stories in a 15-minute presentation. A meal plan is not required to attend the event and all are encouraged to hear the unique tales of Castleton women. A special door rate of $4 per person for lunch will be offered for all guests attending the event.
A special edition of Every Woman Has A Story will be held on Thursday, March 24 at 12:30 p.m., featuring local women in public service. Panel speakers include Rutland County State’s Attorney Rose Kennedy, Development and Outreach Manager for Vermont Community Access Media and Castleton alum Llu Mulvaney-Stanak and Castleton University Professor of Social Work Professor Lillian Jackson.
Various other events will be featured throughout the remainder of the month, as well as the Vermont Women in Higher Education Annual Conference, an all-day event held at the Killington Grand Hotel on Friday, April 1.
