Basketball season underway

Rutland Recreation Department opens registrations

First and second grade basketball

Basketball is a great sport to expand your child’s coordination and self-esteem. Rutland Recreation basketball programs are designed to help kids learn the basics of dribbling, passing, and shooting the ball, all while learning what it means to be part of a team. This is the ideal age to develop skills that will last a lifetime in this 45 minute introduction to the world of basketball! Starts Jan. 2; $33 Rutland City residents, $44 non-resident. Register at rutlandrec.com. $10 late registration fee will be added after Dec. 23.

Third and fourth, fifth and sixth grade traveling basketball league

The season began the week of Nov. 16 with open gym for all registered players, but games don’t start until December. Rutland Recreation basketball leagues place emphasis on fun, skill development, equal participation, teamwork and sportsmanship. Volunteer coaches will cover the fundamentals of dribbling, passing, defense, and shooting as well as the rules and strategies of the game.

Third- and fourth-graders will play an 8-10 game season and players will have four scheduled skill sessions with Coach Joan Olsen. Fifth- and sixth-graders will play a 12-14 game season.

If you are a non-Rutland City resident and your school does not have a team, you are eligible to register for our program. Otherwise you must register with your own town. City residents will be given priority. Cost: $62 for residents, $73 non-residents. $40 non-refundable deposit required. $10 late registration fee will be added after Nov. 15.
