Alpine athletes heading to Mammoth

Twenty four Killington Mountain School student-athletes, six coaches, and two faculty members are packing up and heading to Mammoth for two weeks of training and racing, KMS reported Nov. 20. Coaches Tom Sell, Jack Bailey, Chelsea Marshall, Peter Girardi, Matt Beers, and Lon Brettell were scheduled to fly out of Boston on Friday for the much-anticipated Mammoth camp.

Student-athlete, Jonny Schwartz commented on the trip, “Mammoth is by far my favorite camp. We stay in a condo right at the base of the mountain, we never have to walk more than 10 meters for anything, the training is always awesome, and the conditions are always great. It’s the one camp that never fails.”

The coaches say that they will focus on race preparation, training GS and Slalom. The snow is good, and the sun is supposed to be out. Several of the U18’s will be racing at Mammoth near the end of the trip on Dec. 11-14, and the U16’s will be racing at Heavenly on Dec. 6-7. At the very end of the two weeks, a group of U18’s will be heading straight from Mammoth to Sunday River for an Open FIS Slalom series.

The energy and excitement about the camp was palpable on campus as the student-athletes attended their final day of classes before leaving. The group worked together to load all of their gear onto a large Budget Rental truck, and it would seem that the KMS crew might take up the entire airplane! Best of luck to those racing, and enjoy the training and the experience!
